Article - About the Apostle Islands Mainland Sea Caves

Updated: Feb 22, 2020

Also known as the Meyers Beach Sea Caves or sometimes as the "ice caves" countless people from all over the world come to the Apostle Islands near Cornucopia, Wisconsin each year to visit these caves.

Meyers beach is within the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, but this location is not actually on one of the islands as you may assume, but rather is located on the mainland only a few miles from Cornucopia Wisconsin.

Part of the Devils Island formation of sandstone, these are some of the highest of the three cave locations within the park; Sand Island, Devils Island, and Meyers beach, or (Mawikwe Bay) The mainland caves provide a formidable viewing due to exposure to the brunt of Lake Superiors waves and weather. This exposure makes the caves amazing, but also potentially dangerous.
